STARHARD UL 981 – Ultra Hard Electrode for Severe Wear Conditions
STARHARD UL 981 is a premium hardfacing electrode engineered for protection against extreme abrasion and metal-to-metal wear. Its tough matrix structure, combined with high hardness, makes it ideal for restoring and reinforcing components exposed to heavy wear, impact, and fatigue.
The electrode can be applied on carbon steels, manganese steels, and even cast iron with appropriate buffer layers. Its formulation ensures crack-free performance with excellent bond strength, and is suitable for use with stringer or 2X weaving beads.

Additional Details
- Clean and gouge worn surfaces before welding
- For Mn steels: Use STARHARD NA 975 as base layer, no preheat needed
- For carbon steels: Use STARALLOY DS 934 as cushion layer for high build-up
- For cast iron: Apply STARALLOY FN 965 as buffer layer for bonding
- Preheat heavy sections to 200–250°C
- Use short arc with stringer or 2x weaving technique
- Deposits are crack-resistant with a stress-relieving microstructure
